There are some movies that are magical. There are some movies that are sweet. And then there are the ones that stay with you forever. Barfi is one of the rare movies of these times that can be categorized as all the three. The movie is every bit enjoyable, and every bit like a beautiful painting. It is the painting of Anurag Basu, who delivers a masterstroke with the movie. Right from the background teaser song at the beginning of the movie, till the last frame, Barfi capsules you in a different world, a canvas where in every frame is like a colourful stroke that portrays the various characters in the movie. The movie is about the happy-go-lucky Barfi, played by Ranbir Kapoor, and his life and love that revolves around his love-at –first-sight Shruti, played by the beautiful Ileana D’Cruz and the his childhood friend Jhilmil, played by Priyanka Chopra. It is a quintessential Poor Girl- Rich boy kind of a triangle love story, but the director wraps it in a beautiful sugar coated offering where the protagonist is a speech and hearing impaired, and his true love an Autistic. The movie depicts how finding happiness in small things in life makes it much more enjoyable, and how it is true that the real essence of love is more about one ness and which needs no language . I personally cannot remember a movie in recent times where I have laughed and enjoyed so much, all of it thanks to the wonderful comic timing of Ranbir Kapoor, whose screen presence is at times chaplin like. Ileana looks beautiful Bengali girl/woman, and gosh isn’t she pretty. Priyanka chopra pulls off a difficult character with ease. The finesse in the movie shows in its different frames. The director and the cinematographer have beautifully captured the scenic and vibrant Kolkata and Bengal, and the heavenly like Darjeeling, in a way that leaves the audience wanting for more. It beautifully captures the feelings of different shades of love - Love at first sight, the confusion between true love and marital love, and the love of someone who is pure at heart. The background score keeps you engrossed at times where there is no dialogue possible, and the each of the songs soothing in their own way. All in all, a movie one has to watch. In an era where commercial cinema has taken the hot seat, such movies are like a whiff of fresh air that reminds us what the celluloid can truly potray. And three cheers to Anurag Basu once again for an excellent movie. I fell In love with Kolkata the city again, after watching movies like Parineeta and Kahaani, and most of it is because of how wonderfully it has been picturized by Basu. Such movies and directors are rare in these times. Barfi lives up to its name. Its sweet , enjoyable and it leaves a smile on your face. Go watch it ! |
